Comedy writer, director, producer for stage, screen and radio, presenter and stand up comedian.
Started out in 1980 as a writer for Naked Radio and was soon asked to contribute to such shows as A Kick Up the Eighties, Spitting Image, Three of a Kind and Not the Nine O’Clock News whilst writing stand up material for Robbie Coltraine and Craig Ferguson and speeches for businessmen, celebrities and the occasional politician.
Joined BBC Scotland in 1983 where - amongst other things – script edited Laugh??? I Nearly Paid My Licence Fee (where his comic creation ‘Mason Boyne’ became a huge hit for Robbie Coltraine), wrote extensively for, script edited and eventually co-produced Naked Video, produced Scotch and Wry, Bing Hitler Live, 2000 Not Out, The Ferguson Theory – which helped launch the career of American tv star Craig Ferguson – and Pulp Video, the show that brought together Greg Hemphill and Ford Kiernan and helped sow the seeds for Chewin’. Is mostly associated with the creation of the longest running football comedy show in the country Only an Excuse? (now in it’s 25th year)
After leaving the BBC, joined The Comedy Unit, Scotland’s leading independent production company – Chewin the Fat, Still Game, Rab C Nesbitt, Watson’s Wind Up – before making the move from behind the scenes into the full glare of stand up comedy. That was six years ago and since then has been performing regularly throughout Scotland.
Recently Phil performed in front of 450 people at the Riviera Hotel, LasVegas and is currently in negotiation over gigs in Los Angeles, Canada, New Jersey, Australia and Dubai.
